'March Cereal Madness' dominos was a huge success this morning! Click on the video to watch as cereal box dominos fall through the hallways of the elementary, ending with the WL-S grand finale in the gym! More than 1400 boxes of cereal were donated by elementary students, families, and staff members to make this possible. Specials teachers planned and designed the route that the dominos would take, while fifth graders were integral in the set-up, tear down, and execution of the falling boxes. After the main event, students helped load volunteers' cars with all 1407 cereal boxes that will stock local food pantries in Champaign and Logan Counties. Thank you to everyone who donated, transported cereal, or helped in any way! You don't want to miss watching this!

Make memories last a lifetime!

Students in Mrs. Brandie Roberts' Edison State Physics class gave second graders a fun lesson in force today. They began with a short description of how we use force in our daily activities. After, they set up a fun experiment to show the force of motion. The experiment involved a balloon that is taped to a straw and looped onto a piece of long string tied to their chairs (photos attached). The balloon, although blown up is not tied, so as it releases air it quickly slides the straw across the length of the string. Next students used bouncy balls to show how an act of force, the ball impacting the surface, creates motion. Finally, they wrapped up the lesson in force with a friend game of tug of war where A LOT of force was used. We love these interactive lessons taught by our own students! Thanks to our Physics students, Gabe McGill, Allie Bolton, Adam Stapleton, Logan Phillips, Christian Davis, and James Powell, for having fun with second graders!

Taran Logwood, Luke McGill, and Abbie Thoman are teaching Junior Achievement to our elementary students. This week, they are working with first graders! Junior Achievement is a K-12 program that helps young people connect what they learn in school to life outside of the classroom. Their philosophy is to help students invest in their future, pursue their dreams, and gain a better understanding of how the world works. Taran and Abbie, pictured in Mrs. Stayrook's and Mrs. Patton/Spencer's classes, are helping students understand needs versus wants and how it relates to real life. Examples of wants included puppies, kittens, toys and candy. Needs included food, shelter, clothing and water. Our students are making connections and enjoy learning from older students!

Elementary yearbook orders are due now through April 3rd. Get yours today at https://ybpay.lifetouch.com/Order/SelectJob?jobNumber=6590023.

Charlie Oelker, a sixth grader, shared his antique microscope with his science class this week! Sixth graders are studying the modern-day microscope and all of its working parts during their unit on cells. It was neat for students to compare the microscopes and see how they have evolved. Charlie and his dad found his microscope at an auction and are restoring it. Thanks for sharing your project with us, Charlie!

Today, all high school sophomores took the YouScience “test”, a combined survey and aptitude test that helps gauge student interests and aptitudes in emerging and existing career fields. The test begins with 11 different brain games that match students with information related to their interests. They were encouraged to take their time and give their best effort to get results that will be most valuable to them as they figure out their post-secondary plans. Results review a student’s natural strengths and interests and match that information to more than 500 careers. Students receive detailed information about each career including salary, requirements like education, training, and day-in-the-life of. The YouScience website shares, “YouScience gives students hope, relevance, and direction by expanding their vision of opportunities. Unlike traditional interest surveys, YouScience uses fun, engaging brain games to capture real measures of aptitude. YouScience then translates those talents into real world, high-demand careers.”
Seniors and sophomores are the first to take the survey, with juniors following in April. We are excited to continue navigating this new program and use it as a planning tool to help guide students as they plan for graduation and beyond.

We are accepting cereal donations through Wednesday!
