West Liberty-Salem participates in the Champaign County Economic Partnership Design Team Challenge for the 8th year in a row! The CCEP challenges county students to become engineers and complete their design challenge for a spot to compete against other local districts! This year, shop and art teacher Chris Smucker had enough interest to have three design teams, the most since the program began in 2016. Andy Hoover is the team engineer. Hoover helps students understand design elements by leading the engineering component. Today, design teams presented their gliders to a panel of judges selected by CCEP for a chance to advance to the County Design Challenge. Judges assessed their presentation and flight to determine a final score. Design team member Connor Garmen-Ferguson told judges, "Our group discovered immediately that our design needed to allow air to move both under the craft and over without having air flow through to slow the design down." They created two gliders to get the perfect successful flight. CCEP judges included Logan Cole, Engineer-ColePak and WLS graduate, Chris Flowers, Champaign County Business Liaison, Connor Bartle, Process Engineer-Weidman, and Andi Mitchell, Business Services, Ohio Means Jobs-Champaign County. Design team made up of Craig Sanford, Max Rudolph, Isaiah Reminder, and Silas King ultimately won and will advance to the Champaign County Economic Partnership Countywide Design Challenge on Friday. They will compete against all other schools in Champaign County. 2023 Design Team Challenge Members include: Taryn Bradley, Aaron Campbell, Connor Garman-Ferguson, Caleb Hershberger, Joy Hudson, Sami King, Teagon Miller, Silas King, Isaiah Reminder, Max Rudolph, Quentin Rudolph, and Craig Stanford. Congratulations to our winners, and great job to the entire Team!

Fourth graders carved pumpkins with their first-grade book buddies on Monday morning! They had a great time designing the perfect spooky or cute faces for their pumpkins! Fourth graders made it educational and fun by practicing counting skills. The pairs counted pumpkin seeds by separating them in groups and counting by odd numbers, even numbers, fives and tens! Mixing grade levels teaches leadership, following directions, sharing, and allows more practice for skills both first and fourth graders need every day!

High School held a Homeroom Halloween decorating challenge! A celebrity panel of judges have tallied their votes and the results are in! Our Celebrity Guest Judges comprised of Mr. Johnson, Deputy J and Coach Red/Mr. J McGill had their hands full selecting from 6 Halloween decorated homerooms. It was an epic battle this year between our top 2 performing rooms. Our top 2 rooms delivered on the WOW factor with lights, décor, acting and thrills, but when the votes were cast there could only be one overall winner. This year’s grand champion Halloween Homeroom is ….Mrs. Arnold with her spooky cast and Haunted Mansion. In second place by only a few points is Mr. Cotrell’s Homeroom which featured epic lights, perfect music and on-point dancing. The competition rounded out with Mrs. Robert’s room in 3rd with excellent use of resources, Mrs. Spencer’s room in 4th, Mrs. Harmon’s room in 5th and in typical fashion, honorable mention goes to Mr. Lynxwiler’s homeroom. In the spirit of Fall Fun, Key Club will provide a full dessert party to Mrs. Arnold’s HR and consolation prizes will be delivered to Cotrell and Roberts for their valiant efforts. Thanks for everyone for participating.

Our Kindergarten and first graders had so much fun at their harvest parties on Friday. We are thankful for so many parents that took the time to organize, donate, and attend the parties for our students!

We have the best school counselors! Students were excited to see them dressed to impress this morning! How fun!
