This week’s staff spotlight goes to Dan Shover Facility Operations Supervisor. Dan has been with WL-S for four years and is currently responsible for building operations, grounds, maintenance and custodial operations. He has been really helpful in implementing and overseeing cleaning and sanitation procedures and we are really thankful! Dan is from Urbana and is married to his wife Stephanie. Together they have three children. Billy is 27 , Daniel 25 , and Megan 21 and granddaughter Kendyll, who is 22 months! When he isn’t overseeing operations at school he enjoys spending time at his cabin on Lake Waynoka, boating, riding his Harley, woodworking, and coloring with his granddaughter, Kendyll. Thanks, Dan, for all you do for our school!

Mrs. Seymour reports another shipment of masks for student and staff distribution! Retired FCS teacher Judy Conrad used her sewing talents to make and donate 100 holiday masks for students and staff at WLS. Retired MS teacher Kyle VanOsdol also pitched in another 25 masks using her sewing talents. An additional thank you to retired elementary teacher Shari Stout for donating fabric earlier this fall. You ladies are so special to our school family and the new masks are really going to help out! Supplies are limited. Masks will be available in the office and in the HS art room for anyone needing or wanting a new mask! Check them out!

Letter from the School Nurse
2020-2021 COVID Pandemic
November 18, 2020
Hello WL-S parents and guardians. With the increase in COVID cases throughout Ohio, we wanted to provide some basic information and guidance regarding illness and concern with COVID19. The WL-S school district follows guidelines from the Champaign County Health District as they are frequently being updated. Below is an overview of a few helpful tips.
Daily Health Assessment-When to stay home
It is IMPERATIVE that parents/guardians are doing a basic health assessment on their student prior to the start of each day. Students will have to remain home (and seek virtual or in-person care by a health care provider) if they exhibit any of the following symptoms (within the past 48 hours):
Abdominal pain, Fever (Temp of 100 or higher), loss of taste or smell, cough (change from baseline), sore throat, new onset severe headache, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, vomiting/diarrhea
This list is not all inclusive so keep that in mind. Please keep your children home if they are sick.
Going Home Sick
If a student comes to school and exhibits ANY of the above-mentioned symptoms, per our guidance from the local health district, the student will be placed in a separate monitored room to be sent home. Students will be expected to be picked up from school within a reasonable time frame to reduce the potential for exposure to others. Please make sure you have transportation plans in place for your child.
When to return to school
Always follow the guidance from the health care provider who evaluates your child. Also, follow guidance from your health district of residence. If you are a positive COVID-19 case the county of residence will contact you with quarantine guidance.
Students who do not have COVID19 may return to school once symptoms are resolving and they are fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. We prefer that you don’t send your child to school if they are sick for half the day (for instance) in order to participate in extra-curriculars. For this year, a child that is ill for any part of a day will not be able to practice or participate in an extracurricular activity.
COVID19 overview:
If your student is a confirmed positive case you are required to notify the school. If your child is placed on quarantine you also need to notify the school. We will receive the notification from the health districts, but parents are notified before the health district. We are required to report total number of district cases to Champaign County Health District.
If you are tested for COVID-19 the recommendation is that you and close contacts such as family members stay home until you receive the results. This is a recommendation not a quarantine. This recommendation should come from the Health Care Provider who tested you or your child based on their assessment. This recommendation may vary based on the provider that you see. Some providers are not requiring this based on their assessment.
Close contacts: Anyone who the positive case spent 15 minutes of continuous time within 6 feet or has had direct physical contact with a positive case
Quarantine general guidelines from Health District of residence: For a confirmed positive case of COVID-19 (10 days starting on the first day of symptoms), all close contacts will be on quarantine (usually 14 days from last contact day regardless of a negative test result). Quarantine guidance is given by the health district of residence. For instance, if you reside in Logan County, follow Logan County guidance. If you reside in Champaign County, follow Champaign County guidance. Provide the school district the appropriate letter or document from the Health District.
Isolation: This term is used to define staying away from others completely. Isolation is recommended for the confirmed positive COVID-19 case. The positive case should isolate (if possible) for example, staying away from their own family members and using their own bathroom etc. Isolation is usually for 10 days starting on the first day of symptoms.
Staying home for 10 days is a possible recommendation (even with a negative COVID-19 test) if the provider feels the symptoms could still possibly be COVID-19. Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions/concerns.

Don’t forget that this week is our Elementary vs. MS/HS food drive and the stakes are high!
The Tigers are collecting food for those in need. The Elementary has challenged the Middle/High School to see who can bring in the most food.
If the Elementary WINS, Mr. Johnson will take a pie in the face! If the Middle/High WINS, Mr. Hollar will take a pie in the face!
The local food pantry suggested the following items:
Food:
canned fruit
syrup
Pop tarts
soups cereal/pancake mix
Soaps:
laundry dish
bar shampoo
Paper Products:
toilet paper paper towels plates napkins
WL-S has started a Blessing Bag program that provides students in need with individual, easy to prep and eat items.
Good items to donate are:
Granola bars, Animal crackers, Fruit cups/applesauce, Raisins (individual boxes), Fruit snacks, Easy Mac, etc.
Let’s spread some cheer this holiday season!

The high school show choir, Sound Check, held their annual showcase performance over the weekend in two shows on Saturday. The weather and power outages cancelled one final performance on Sunday evening. Show choir performed a total of 7 pieces inspired by Broadway shows, and soloists and ensembles performed 19 more highly entertaining musical numbers. There was no shortage of entertainment and creativity from this group of very talented musicians, some even performing in multiple songs and dances. Practices began this summer with a choreography camp and followed with practices on Monday evenings. If you got the chance to see them perform please join us in telling them what an awesome job they did! Special thanks to Mrs. Seymour and Advanced Art students for all of their help with the backdrop and stage decor.

The next regular Board Meeting, to be held on Tuesday, November 17th, at 7 PM, will be held via ZOOM and YouTube Live due to an increase in COVID 19 cases throughout Logan and Champaign Counties. You may access the YouTube Live channel/link on the main page of our website (wlstigers.org) under the Menu tab. Look for "Kraig Hissong's Live Feed" under General Information.
Thank You, Kraig Hissong

Hello families. Due to ongoing loss of power at school, the show choir performance scheduled for today (Sunday) has been cancelled.

Hello families, This is Kraig Hissong, Superintendent of WLS. If you were planning to attend todays showchoir performance at 5 PM, it has been postponed to 6 PM due to loss of electric. If power is not restored by 5 pm, we will unfortunately have to cancel the performance. We will let you know. Thank you!

This weekend, the Sound Check show choir will perform their 5th Annual Showcase. Unfortunately, this year the show isn’t open to the general public— only 2 tickets per performer. It will be live-streamed during show times on Saturday at 2pm and 7pm, and Sunday at 5pm. A special thanks to the HS Advanced Art students and Mrs. Seymour who contributed to the show this year with their design and painting the back wall on stage.

Do you have a student, 16 or older, looking for an after school job? Green Hills and Mercy Health-Urbana are hiring!

The sophomore class hosted a ‘Hats on for Veterans’ school-wide fundraiser and toiletry drive on Veteran’s Day. The goal of the fundraiser, at the suggestion of Vets Services, was to generate enough money and/or toiletries to create Christmas gift baskets for the local veteran widows and female veterans. Vet’s Services said they are often an overlooked population and could use the extra support, especially during the holiday season.
Our students provided enough for a trunk load of toiletries that will go to Logan County Veteran’s Services next week.
The sophomore class officers will create gift baskets with gas cards, toiletries and Christmas goodies that LoCo Vet’s Services will deliver on behalf of the WL-S Sophomore Class. We wouldn’t be able to do any of this, if we didn’t have such a great staff and group of kids willing and able to donate their funds on Wednesday.
Thank you to everyone who helped support our Vets!

West Liberty-Salem students, who enrolled in Physics through Edison State University, built awesome water rockets as a part of their unit on Newton’s Law of Motion! Mrs. Brandie Roberts, who also teaches high school physical science, assisted her class in a successful launch earlier this week! They spent several days building the rockets and were asked to use an astroblade and trigonometry to determine the height of the rocket blasts in several different launches. This interdisciplinary approach allowed students to understand how a scientist uses more than one area of study in a single experiment.

Check out what’s happening in FFA. This article was submitted by Madeline Hutton, FFA Reporter
