West Liberty-Salem joined four other Champaign County schools in a county wide art competition this week. Art works were displayed and judged at The Mike Major Sculpture Gallery in Urbana on Tuesday. A very talented group of artists represented WL-S including Regan Boyd, Alexandrea Caldwell, Mearic Campbell, Arianna Chapman, Ethan Costentino-Ilges, Ryan Motzko, Logan Saylor, Holden Shafer, Hallie Smith, Aubrey Williams, and Montana Zinn. Several mediums of art were featured in the competition with WL-S artists placing in each category.
Awards were given Aubrey Williams, 1st place-Mixed Media; Ryan Motzko, 3rd place-Black & White Drawing; Holden Shafer, 3rd place-Painting. WL-S took the top three photography spots with Mearic Campbell in 1st place, Alexandrea Caldwell in 2nd, and Regan Boyd in 3rd.
A reception will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening featuring roughly 100 pieces of art from all county schools. Due to a scheduling conflict for our students who will attend the Academic Excellence Banquet on Thursday, The Mike Major Art Studio will be open from 12-8 p.m. for anyone who wishes to attend. During the reception hour, please bring just 1 guest.

Our HS Zoology students had a ‘Tide Pool Tasting’ and experienced how marine life is used in cuisine all over the world! The menu included clams, scallops, mussels, octopus and shrimp that students prepared themselves (with the help of Mrs. Smith, of course!). They really enjoyed the experience, testing their palates, and a few of them just might end up foodies!

We had a record turn out of students supporting students last night at our ‘White Out’ baseball and softball games! It was great to have a student section again and cheer both teams on to a victory! Tonight, students are invited to support their friends at the boys and girls track meet. The theme is camo! HS students are admitted free (masks are required at our events but are sometimes removed for photo opportunities.)

Last week, Key Club discussed ways they could encourage students to engage with their peers by supporting them in their respective extra and co curricular activities . The idea of students supporting each other across extracurriculars was introduced during a leadership conference attended by a handful of our students recently. Key Club kicks off ‘Students supporting Students’ this week encouraging them to attend Track & Field, Varsity and Reserve Softball and Baseball events for the next two weeks, complete with themed student sections. The idea will be carried out through the end of the school year and into the fall/winter season. HS students will be admitted to the themed events free of charge thanks to Mr. Jake Vitt! This week’s events are attached. We hope to see our students there!!

Any 18 year old, graduating senior, Genric is hiring for full time security positions! Details are attached.

Congratulations to Ryan Motzko and Katelyn Stapleton for being named our April Seniors of the Month! Seniors are nominated and selected by their teachers for being good students and active participants in school and the community.

Our United Way of Logan County youth representatives have been hard at work tackling some of the most pressing issues that affect the families in Logan County. WL-S representatives are Juniors, Michah Stoner and Avery Davis, and Seniors, Kaylee LeVan and Lance Baldwin. The full article featured on Peak of Ohio is attached.
“After two months spent learning about and discussing the biggest issues that affect local youth, Logan County high schoolers serving on the Student United Way committee are seeking funding proposals to address them. The group has $20,000 from the annual United Way campaign to spend and is inviting all local organizations and schools to submit a Youth Allocations Grant application to help fund one or more projects.”

Congratulations to the Tiger Cheer Team for a job well done this morning! They took the mat at the OHC Cheer Competition with a solid performance! Way to represent WL-S, ladies!!

Our High School Key Club took full advantage of yesterday’s weather and held their spring meeting outside. Several important topics were up for discussion including planning their last few Fun Friday events! If you have missed it, Key Club has been hosting fun activities during 1st and 2nd homeroom periods in the gym. They usually involve some type of relay event or competition against teacher/administrator teams. It’s become a really popular event and a way for the students to let loose and have fun during this unusual year.
Key Club officers and Delegates also used the meeting to highlight the benefits of serving in key club, encouraging new members to consider signing up for a position next year.
They wrapped things up by brainstorming for their final service project of the year (TBA) and other ways to support our student body. Since the pandemic began, they lost the tradition of having a student section during fall/winter sports. But, they hope to bring that back to our outside events this spring! Provided that they can find a safe way to do so, they would call this ‘Students Supporting Students’ and round out the school year supporting their friends and athletes!
Overall, it was a productive meeting on a beautiful day!
