Hello WL-S Families, The last two Mondays have been unusually busy during morning parent drop off. I think this may be due to weather and more parents choosing to take their children to school. Overall, everyone has been doing a great job despite having to wait longer than normal in line. Here are just a few tips to remind everyone of how best to navigate morning drop off. Thanks! 1. Be Patient! Take your time making decisions and allow yourself at least 10 minutes to get through the parent drop off line when it is busy. Over 300 cars are dropping off each morning , and we want to ensure everyone’s safety! 2. Be Ready! Make sure your kids shoes, coat, and book bag are on and ready so it does not create any additional time for your child to exit your vehicle. 3. Use the front parking lot if your child needs assistance getting out of the car or getting organized. Then use the crosswalk to walk your child to the school. This is very helpful to parents with younger children. 4. Pull forward as far as you can before you stop and drop off. Don’t forget that you can go past the flag pole and the fire lane to drop off. This helps to spread cars out! 5. ALWAYS use the curb lane to let your child out of the car or use the front parking lot. We want to ensure no students have to cut between traffic. This could lead to a dangerous situation. 6. To avoid the crowd, try to arrive before 7:25 AM 7. Be Patient and Cautious! Having spoken to parents and families who have dropped children off at other school districts, I think we have one of the best designed and efficient drop off lanes in the area for parents, but it relies on everyone looking out for each other’s children to make sure it is safe. Thanks for being a part of the team to ensure everyone gets to school safely! Thank you, Kraig Hissong

On Thursday, Pages‘ students worked with book binder and artist, Jonna Twiggs, as well as the Wexner Center’s Dionne Custer-Edwards (Director of Learning & Public Practice). Due to Covid restrictions this year, Pages’ students are participating in virtual field trips and workshops. The Journal Making Workshop was led by Jonna, who is a professional book binder. All students received the book binding materials at the start of the workshop. Through Zoom, Jonna showed the students how to sew and bind their own Pages Journals, using needle and waxed thread. Once complete, the students were given a short writing activity by Dionne. They will be using those journals throughout their Pages experience this school year. Pages, provided by The Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio is a creative arts experience offered to students at WL-S in Mythology class, as well as other interested student participants, and led by Jessica Haney. Pages: Art & Writing is a multi-disciplinary program that supports literacy and writing skills through the exploration of contemporary art, film, and performing arts. This program is free for students and pairs educators and artists from the Wexner Center with high school teachers from across central Ohio in the planning of writing-based experiential learning opportunities.

We are pleased to announce the opening of our school based health center on January 19th! Many of our families have had questions on how billing will work for services. If you wish to have your student seen if necessary, please take a moment to log into Final Forms and fill out the consent form. Once your student has received services (remember, you will be notified in advance) you can call Community Health and Wellness at any time to have your insurance on file. Our families will be billed just like any visit to their primary health care visit, so in the event that you have copays, an invoice will be mailed to your home. We do not except (or want) students to pay for services at school. If you need to have insurance placed on file at that time, you may call 937-599-1411. Please let us know if you have any other questions by messaging or calling the office. Thank you!

This week’s staff spotlight goes to Nikki Burkhamer. Mrs. Burkhamer joined the WL-S elementary paraprofessional team in November. Please help us give her a warm welcome to the WL-S family! My name is Nikki Johnson Burkhamer. I am from West Liberty, and I attended WL-S from kindergarten to graduation. So, I am very excited to now be part of the staff at "my school." I am the mother of 4 boys, and I recently married James, who added another son to our household. Now, we have four boys all together! My guys are very into music, theater, Jazz, and gaming, of course. I am a recent grad from Liberty University, and I thoroughly enjoyed my studies, there. I worked at The Logan County Libraries for 16 years, and I love everything about reading, writing, and books. While working there, “Writers Rule” was a middle-school writing group that I presented to the area youth. It was a joy to work with these students over the 14 years that our library has offered this program. I love theater, and I especially enjoy doing make-up for productions at The Holland Theatre. It is one of my favorite places to be. For many years I have lived in the Ben Logan School District where my youngest son is a freshman. I am a big supporter of their Music Booster Organization. Fewer things bring me more joy than spending time with my friends and family, and I love to plan parties and get-togethers for them. I began working at WL-S in November of 2020, and I am a paraprofessional that works alongside teachers in Kindergarten, 4th, and 5th grades, here. It has been my pleasure to be in these classes and to have the opportunities to work with several students in one-on-one sessions or in small groups. I also serve as a substitute teacher, in the afternoons, when needed. It’s a great day to be a Tiger! I am looking forward to the rest of this school year!

We are excited to officially announce the opening of the WL-S School-Based Health Center (SBHC) that opened on January 19th. In partnership with Community Health & Wellness Partners, we have the opportunity to provide healthcare services to our students and faculty on the WL-S campus for anyone who wishes to participate. If you elect for your student to receive services, the clinic is able to offer many services that you would typically receive in a doctor’s office or urgent care. The new health center offers these services in addition to the traditional school nurse services you have always received. If a family member choses to have their child be seen at the School-Based Health Clinic, there are two main ways this clinic could be beneficial to you. First, as an Urgent Care. You can use our clinic similarly to an urgent care facility to receive many of the same services. The advantage is the convenience of having services available for you at school. This could speed up the process to receive treatment that may have required an additional trip to an urgent care or time to schedule a Dr. visit. Some of the common services a student or staff member could be seen for are the following: • Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) • Allergies and asthma • Pink Eye • Mono • Bronchitis • Common Cold • Flu (influenza) • Ear Infection • Strep Throat • Head Lice • Diagnosis and possible treatment for minor injuries, (Fractures, Sprains, Cuts, Burns, and Falls). Second, for Primary Care Services. If you are already a patient of CHWP or you do not have a Primary Care Physician, CHWP would be happy to assist you in your primary care needs. Our School-Based health clinic is an extension of the larger CHWP array of services for our community, including mental health services, and has 5 locations throughout the area and its main office is located on US HWY 68, north of West Liberty, formally known as Oak Hill. Health Screenings, Wellness exams, etc. can also be conducted here on-site, at the CHWP School Based Health Clinic. Jennifer Douthwaite, Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP), our school nurse for the past six years, will serve as the licensed care provider along with her nurse, Beth Wing LPN. We recommend that all families preregister your children for the most convenience in accessing these new services. To do so please. please log in to your Final Forms account and complete the Health Center and Demographic Information forms. You can access these on our website at wlstigers.org -> Menu -> Final Forms-> and log into your Parent or Staff account. Once login is complete, you will see your children listed. Select a child to pre-register and go to there forms. You should see two forms in the list highlighted in RED. (Health Center and Demographic Information) Complete these forms and you will be all set to be seen at WL-S School Based Health Center. You will ALWAYS be called, by health center staff , for permission to treat your child if or he/she appears to need professional services. You can find more information about the Health Center on our website at wlstigers.org -> Menu -> Wellness -> WL-S School Based Health Center.

Rehearsals for this year’s production of ‘Shrek: The Musical’ are in full swing! Mr. Henry, Mrs. Arnold and the entire cast and crew are hard at work after school and sometimes during their home room time to make sure things are falling into place. Yesterday, Mr. Henry got in some extra time with the fairytale creatures. The production is set to take stage March 19 & 20, and we can’t wait!
