They practice as one team at the Champaign Family YMCA, but they represent their individual home schools when competing. Pictured are Peyton Hull and Kam Hissong both competing in the 50 freestyle from this weekend’s meet. Way to go, Tigers!

There is one last chance for last minute gift shopping tomorrow morning at Santa Shop. We had a wonderful week, and our PTO thanks you for making it extra special for your student shoppers! EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU to our PTO Volunteers who do all of the shopping, help shoppers make their selections, set up, tear down and tidy up! We appreciate you!!

We know this week looks like we’ve been having too much fun, but we are still learning, and more importantly, our students haven’t checked out yet! A group of students showed up at 7 AM just to study for Mr. Cotrell’s Algebra test! Keep up the great work!

SANTA! I know him!

Our high school Calculus Club is in the giving spirit this holiday season. Every year, they adopt a family in need, donate gifts, and use meeting time to wrap them! Mr. Todd Lewis, Calc Club Advisor, is pictured with his team.

Mrs. Renee Arnold’s War Literature class had a White Elephant Christmas mug gift exchange this morning. They had fun celebrating with their class!

It’s a short week but still so much to do! Week at a glance! Go Tigers!

Elementary classes enjoyed guest readers while teachers enjoyed breakfast with their colleagues this morning! Pictured are Athletic Director Morgan Sullivan, Middle School Principal Andy McGill, and Superintendent Kraig Hissong enjoying time in the classroom.

Elementary teachers were treated to a potluck breakfast with an ugly Christmas sweater theme by our student council! Student council organized and served breakfast and administrators assisted by covering class time and reading to our students so that each teacher could participate.

Today, Linda Harr, Transportation Director, retires after 31 years of service to our district, families, community, and most importantly the safe transportation of our students. She selflessly dedicated herself to our school district making difficult decisions when weather was rough, while taking into consideration the safety of her own drivers, our parents and our student drivers. She organized field trip transportation, athletic event transportation and the numerous clubs and other extra-curricular activities that needed to get where they were going. She navigated driver shortages, rising gas prices, and any other obstacles with ease and grace. She will surely be missed, but we wish her the very best life has yet to offer! After school Mrs. Harr was joined by staff and her family for a presentation of cards and flowers. Busses made their way through the pick up lane, stopped and a student from each bus presented her with 2 flowers. By the time the line was finished she received 31 flowers for her 31 years of service. Thank you, Linda Harr, for your selfless dedication to the students, staff and families of West Liberty-Salem Local Schools.

Key Club Fun Friday, Holiday Edition! This month’s Fun Friday featured ‘Finish the Lyric’ with Christmas music. Freshman lost to sophomores, Juniors lost to Seniors, but the Seniors beat the Sophomores for the final victory! Each losing team got to smash a whip cream pie in the face of brave volunteers from the losing team. It was certainly a fun and festive time!

First graders gave the audience an early Christmas treat with their holiday concert! They looked so festive and sounded beautiful!

We are celebrating next week! Here are some activities to keep in mind when you are preparing for the short week ahead!

Second Harvest Food Bank is looking for volunteers to help with food distribution for their Christmas delivery. In the photo attached, you will find locations and contact information to sign up. If you wish to participate and you have high school students, they can use these hours to help meet their community service goal. Happy helping!

The West Liberty-Salem Chapter of The National Honor Society inducted 25 new members on Monday, December 12th. New members include two seniors and 23 juniors. Emma Kauffman presided as the Master of Ceremony, and the theme was, “Reach for the Stars.” President Abbigayle Long offered the opening remarks with her speech that encourage members to persevere, even when something feels like it’s to demanding or so far out of reach. She shared that just 100 years ago, we couldn’t fathom reaching outer space, but now we have footprints on the moon, and for a small fortune, you can even take a trip there! Her words were meant to inspire our students to continue that forward progression, even when the task is daunting. Senior Representative Shae Stoner and Secretary Lexy Lee, and Historian Brittany Neer introduced new members and presented their induction certificates and Gold Cords. The ceremony was followed by light refreshments and dessert sponsored by senior NHS members. The following students were inducted:
Front Row (Left to right): Whitney Ridenbaugh, Rylie Schultz, Addison McAuley, Abigail Miller, Sari Kitchen, Julia Wilson, Ashely Yoder, Isabelle Wygal
Second Row: Mallory Bostick, Makenzy Sandefur, Kenzie Phillips, Jaycee Yelton, Megan Hollar, Kerrigan Burgel, Ivy Cline, Abby Guest, Olivia Wilcox
Third Row: Joey LaRoche, Madeline Cole, Lily Smith, Carter Titus, Veronica Wall, Lillian Weaver, Bailey Poppe, and Chaley Wade

If you'd like your child to participate, please send cash or check (made payable to WLS PTO) in the provided envelope.

The National Honor Society recently hosted their annual blood drive with Community Blood Centers. Thirteen faculty members and 21 students registered to donate blood allowing for 21 units to be collected. The NHS met their goal and donations will go on to save 87 lives! We have several student who wish to receive their red cords for graduation and are well on their way. The red cord represents that they have donated at least 3 times either in school or in community blood drives. NHS will host the next blood drive in December 2023.

Congratulations to Emma Krois, fourth grader, who is our elementary Spelling Bee Champion! Sixteen of the top spellers in the fourth and fifth grade competed for 17 rounds and spelled a total of 137 words in about an hour. Rosemary Sokolow, 5th grade, was the runner up. Emma takes a written spelling exam in February that will determine her placement in the state Spelling Bee at Ohio University in March. Congratulations, again, to Emma and Rosemary! Great job!
