Hello WLS Families, This is Kraig Hissong, Superintendent, with two important messages. First, tomorrow, Friday, October 3rd, we will have a Two-Hour Delay start for professional development. School will start at 9:40 for MS/HS students and 9:45 for Elementary students. OHP and Mac students will start at the normal times.
Second, we have completed the first month of school and things appear to be off to a great start. I do want to remind parents that drop students off in the morning at the school of a few important things;
1. Please be patient and careful in the morning during parent drop off. Over 300 cars are dropping off each morning. Expect to wait on others! Parent drop off is only as safe as parents make it! If you do not like lines and traffic, arrive before 7:20 AM.
2. If you are using the elementary drop off lane, Please make sure that you only allow your children to exit the vehicle when you are next to the curb. Do not drop students off in the bypass lane.
3. If your elementary child needs assistance getting out of the car, please use a parking spot in the front parking area and then walk them all the way to the sidewalk.
4. Please make sure that you are utilizing the south entrance to enter our campus if you are coming to school from the south, or from the direction of Urbana. This is important to ensure good traffic flow on campus.
5. BE PATIENT! it takes time for over 300 cars to enter and exit the drop off lane! Please plan accordingly and make sure you keep your child and other children safe!
Thank you for a great start to the school year and for choosing West Liberty-Salem Schools!
Kraig Hissong

Fall brings out the best math activities at WL-S! 7th graders in Mrs. Mazza's class put their order of operations skills to the test with a festive pumpkin challenge. 🧡
Each expression had to be solved and matched to complete their pumpkins — and the best part? They did it all without calculators! ✅💪
Way to go, 7th graders! You proved that math can be challenging, hands-on, and FUN. 🐯 #TigerPride #MathWithPumpkins #FallLearning

Our 1st graders in Mrs. Patton’s and Mrs. Spencer’s classes put their lesson on the 5 senses into action today — and what better way than with an apple tasting in the spirit of fall! 🍁
They explored all things apples — from juice 🧃 and muffins 🧁 to apple chips 🍏 and Apple Jacks! 🥣 It was a hands-on (and delicious) way to connect classroom learning to real-life experiences.
Way to go, 1st graders — you’re making learning tasty and fun! 🧡🖤 #TigerPride #FallLearning #FiveSenses

🌟🐯 Hall of Fame Spotlight: Coach Ann Thornburg 🐯🌟
Few individuals have shaped WL-S athletics with the dedication and longevity of Ann Thornburg. For more than five decades, Ann poured her heart into West Liberty-Salem, coaching basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, cross country, and track & field while inspiring generations of student-athletes.
A 1973 WL-S graduate, Ann returned to her alma mater as a teacher in 1978 and began a remarkable career that blended academics, athletics, and extracurricular leadership. Over her 35 years in the classroom (retiring in 2013), she coached:
🏀 2 seasons of Basketball
🏐 7 seasons of Volleyball
🏃♀️ 10 seasons of Track & Field
📣 16 seasons of Cheerleading
Among her many achievements, Ann proudly led her cheer team to qualify for and compete at Nationals in Dallas, Texas in 2007.
Her impact reached far beyond the sidelines. Ann mentored students through Link Crew, advised Student Council, helped organize the Leadership Academy, and embraced and built upon the beloved tradition of Elementary Track & Field Days, ensuring it continued to grow for future generations. She even shared her adventurous spirit as a leader in Ski Club, creating countless memories for students.
Through every role, Ann invested in the growth of the whole student—instilling discipline, teamwork, and confidence, while creating opportunities for young people to discover their talents and leadership potential.
Her legacy is one of inspiration, service, and community—a true cornerstone of Tiger Nation. 🧡🐯 Ann will be inducted in the WL-S Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 11th. Social hour begins at 5:30, with dinner and ceremony to follow. If you'd like to reserve your seat at the ceremony. please call 937-465-1140 today.
