Charlie Oelker, a sixth grader, shared his antique microscope with his science class this week! Sixth graders are studying the modern-day microscope and all of its working parts during their unit on cells. It was neat for students to compare the microscopes and see how they have evolved. Charlie and his dad found his microscope at an auction and are restoring it. Thanks for sharing your project with us, Charlie!

Today, all high school sophomores took the YouScience “test”, a combined survey and aptitude test that helps gauge student interests and aptitudes in emerging and existing career fields. The test begins with 11 different brain games that match students with information related to their interests. They were encouraged to take their time and give their best effort to get results that will be most valuable to them as they figure out their post-secondary plans. Results review a student’s natural strengths and interests and match that information to more than 500 careers. Students receive detailed information about each career including salary, requirements like education, training, and day-in-the-life of. The YouScience website shares, “YouScience gives students hope, relevance, and direction by expanding their vision of opportunities. Unlike traditional interest surveys, YouScience uses fun, engaging brain games to capture real measures of aptitude. YouScience then translates those talents into real world, high-demand careers.”
Seniors and sophomores are the first to take the survey, with juniors following in April. We are excited to continue navigating this new program and use it as a planning tool to help guide students as they plan for graduation and beyond.

ALL ABOARD THE IMAGINATION TRAIN for a look back at all the fun we had at Literacy Night! BIG thanks to everyone that helped make this happen! Planning begins months in advance, and Mrs. Cotrell does an amazing job of organizing ideas that lead us to the grand finale. We had so many community sponsors (noted in the attached video), educators, student helpers, PTO members, administrators, resident artists, and more that helped pull our big night off. And, thanks to all of our students and their families for joining us for another elementary Literacy Night!

Students in ELA 8 have been learning the geography and history of Hawaii. They are building their background knowledge before studying historic documents on the annexation of our 50th state in order to form and write formal arguments. Tuesday, students rotated from station to station gathering information and answering questions. They eventually followed a "trail" leading to the Napali Coast where they posed for a selfie with a waterfall and found treasure in the form of candy!

WL-S elementary needs your help with March Cereal Madness! We are collecting unopened boxes of cereal through to be donated to local food pantries that will first be used in an elementary school domino experiment. Our goal is to collect 1500 boxes of cereal to fulfill a community need and just the right amount to set up cereal box dominos. We have received just under 400 boxes since literacy night, so thank you! You can send boxes in with your student, or you can drop off donations in the office by March 15th. We appreciate the support! And keep an eye out for the domino finale that will be posted on March 17th.
