🧡🖤 Happy National School Communicator Day! 🖤🧡
As a school communicator, one of the greatest privileges is getting to tell the story of our district each and every day. From classroom learning and athletic victories to fine arts performances, service projects, and everyday moments that make our schools special, it is an honor to shine a light on the incredible students, staff, and families that make West Liberty-Salem such a special place.
We are fortunate to witness firsthand the hard work, kindness, resilience, and accomplishments happening across our campus, and even more grateful to share those moments with all of you.
Thank you for following along, supporting our schools, celebrating our students, and engaging with the stories we share. Your encouragement, comments, shares, and community pride help make our district stronger and remind our students that they are surrounded by people who care deeply about their success.
Every story shared is really your story too, and we are thankful to tell it. 🧡🐾

🚜🐄🐐 Yesterday our West Liberty-Salem FFA Chapter hosted Elementary Ag Science Day, giving young students a hands-on look at life on the farm! From sheep, goats, bunnies, chickens, a donkey, pig, cow, and calves, to tractors and other implements brought in by our own students, it was an incredible day of learning and fun! A huge THANK YOU to our students who brought animals and equipment, those who provided a fantastic lunch, guided students through each station, and our amazing Ag families who helped haul trailers and donated for their support. We’re proud of this awesome WLS tradition! 🌾💛🖤 #TigerPride #AgScienceDay #WLSFFA

🧡🐾 Supporting a Great Cause in Our Community 🐾🧡
Our West Liberty-Salem community has a wonderful opportunity to come together and support an important cause in the coming days, benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
🍽️ Tuesday, May 12 - Subway Community Day
Thanks to the generosity of Mike and Traci Ritter, Subway is hosting a Community Day where a portion of all proceeds for the entire day will be donated to the CF Foundation.
➡️ Consider grabbing dinner for your family or picking up a meal on your way home. It’s an easy way to make a difference!
🚶♀️ Sunday, May 17 - Great Strides Walk
Join the Champaign & Logan Counties Great Strides Walk at Lions Park in West Liberty.
🕐 Activities begin at 1:00 PM
🚶 Walk begins at 2:00 PM
This annual event supports the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, working to improve the lives of those with CF and to find a cure. It’s always a fun, family-friendly afternoon filled with activities, community spirit, and purpose.
At WL-S, these efforts are especially meaningful as we support students and alumni like fourth grader Jameson Johnson (the extra-strong guy pictured with Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Dallas) and alumni Addy Cole and Ava Johnson. Your support helps bring hope and progress closer each year—until CF stands for Cure Found. 🧡

🦞🔬 Our biology students are diving into hands-on learning this week with crayfish dissections!
One of the most interesting parts of this lab has been exploring the crayfish’s exoskeleton and comparing it to the structures seen in previous dissections. While some students found it fascinating… others may not have found it quite as appealing! 😅
Experiences like these help students better understand anatomy, body systems, and how different organisms are uniquely designed. Great job to our students for stepping outside their comfort zones and embracing real-world science learning! 🧡🐾

🥘Our Spanish 3 & 4 students took a delicious trip to Spain this week as they learned how to make traditional Spanish paella in Señora McDole’s class!
From learning about Spanish culture and cuisine to working together in the kitchen, students got a hands-on experience that brought language learning to life. And judging by the smiles (and empty plates 😋), the paella was a success!
What a fun way to combine culture, creativity, and cooking while practicing Spanish skills along the way. Great job, students, and thank you to Señora McDole for creating such an engaging experience! 🧡🐾

🧡🐾 Last night, we had the privilege of celebrating five extraordinary members of the West Liberty-Salem family as they begin a well-earned retirement after decades of service, dedication, and love for students.
Together, these educators represent an incredible 163 years of service, with most of those years spent right here at West Liberty-Salem. Their impact reaches far beyond classrooms and hallways. They have shaped generations of students, supported countless coworkers, and helped make WL-S the special place it is today.
Please help us congratulate:
🍎 Jim Barhorst – 26 years at WL-S, 33 years total
🍎 Lanay Cordell – 26 years at WL-S
🍎 Cindy Dallas – 33 years at WL-S, 36 years total
🍎 Darlene Frederick – 33 years at WL-S, 34 years total
🍎 Julie Hartsel – 34 years of service
These individuals have spent their careers pouring their hearts into students each and every day, celebrating successes, offering encouragement during challenges, and creating classrooms where children felt supported, valued, and cared for. Their influence will continue to be felt for many years through the lives they have touched and the memories they helped create.
Retirement is the closing of an important chapter, but the legacy each of these educators leaves behind at West Liberty-Salem is one that cannot be measured simply in years of service. It is found in the students they inspired, the friendships they built, and the countless moments that made a difference in someone’s life.
Thank you, Jim, Lanay, Cindy, Darlene, and Julie, for your unwavering commitment to our students, our staff, and our community. You will always be a part of the Tiger family, and we wish you nothing but happiness, relaxation, and new adventures in retirement. 🧡🖤
