Students became sticky-birds and studied an imaginary species of worms to better understand how natural selection occurs. Birds (8th grade Science students) competed against one another for as many worms as they could get before the crazy farmer lady (as Mrs. Fullenkamp refers to her role in the lab) chased them off. They had a lot of fun!

Seniors visit The Met! Today, they are visiting museums and shopping on Fifth Avenue. They will head home later this evening, and we wish them safe travels!

West Liberty-Salem High School held their annual White Tiger Award Ceremony on Friday, April 12th. The White Tiger Award is presented to students in grades 9-12 who work hard, have a great attitude, give from the heart, and are a positive role model for other students. Like a white tiger, these students are rare, and this ceremony is all about celebrating the unique impact they’ve had on the staff member who nominated them. This year a total of 21 students were honored by a teacher or staff member. Each White Tiger recipient qualifies for a scholarship provided by the Angie Warye Foundation. In addition to recognition and scholarship potential, each student receives a certificate and a letter written by the nominating staff member. Congratulations to the following recipients!

West Liberty-Salem seniors recently participated in Real Money. Real World presented by The Ohio State University Extension Office. The financial literacy program features an interactive spending simulation that presents students with lifestyle and budget scenarios like what they will make as adults. The morning session began with a 4-module presentation that covered the topics students would experience during the activity.
The topics were:
Training, Jobs, and Income
Deductions-What you see is not what you get
How to use Financial Services wisely
Making Choices-preparing for the simulation
Federal Tax
State and Local Tax
FICA
Retirement savings
Any contributions to a savings account
Chance (because life is unpredictable, and things happen)
Child Care
Clothing
Communications (cell phone options)
Contributions
Credit and or college loans
Entertainment
Food
Housing
Insurance
Transportation
Health and Wellness
Each student was then given a future occupation, education, and family. Some went straight to the workforce, while others continued their education (options included trade school, community college, bachelor’s, and master’s degree options). Some had a spouse and children, while others were managing a family on a single income.
They visited 12 "real life" tables where volunteers worked with students on things like grocery budgets, childcare, insurance, and entertainment to name a few.
The goal was to end the game with money left in their monthly budget. Most students did well, but many students were surprised at the cost of living and how hard it was to stretch their income. Students mentioned that what they thought was a good salary might not be enough. Molly Smith, HS Counselor said, “I think the experience was fairly eye-opening. The students I talked to found it helpful and enjoyed it.”
Real Money. Real World. is a collaboration between The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences and their county extension offices. If you’d like to learn more about the experience, visit Home | Real Money. Real World. (osu.edu).
