On Thursday, November 14, 2024, the Madison-Champaign Educational Service Center (ESC) hosted its sixth annual Community STARs Service Award program. This event, established by the ESC staff, recognizes outstanding students and staff who exemplify the qualities of servant leadership. These individuals go beyond self-interest to serve the needs of others, personifying the true spirit of leadership through selflessness and service. Among those nominated for the Community STAR Award were West Liberty-Salem senior Taran Logwood and Special Education Coordinator Julie Hartsel. Taran was nominated by High School Counselor Molly Smith and Teacher/Coach Dan McGill, while Julie Hartsel received her nomination from High School Secretary Julie Nieman. As part of the nomination process, students were invited to honor a "Person of Impact" in their lives who has shaped their personal and academic growth. Taran chose to recognize coach and mentor, Andrew Donahoe, for his significant influence in both his athletic and personal development. Congratulations Taran and Julie on leading by your examples of selfless leadership!

This morning, first graders in Mrs. Spencer and Patton’s class had the chance to meet with their book buddies—fourth graders from Mrs. Johnson’s class! The book buddy program provides first graders with extra reading time while helping them build confidence in reading aloud with an older friend. Fourth graders assist by sounding out words, offering encouragement, and developing valuable mentoring skills. The partnership between first and fourth graders has been a tradition for many years, and the program continues throughout the school year. First graders love getting to know their older peers, and the fourth graders enjoy the sense of responsibility that comes with being role models. It's a win-win for both groups, fostering friendships, boosting reading skills, and creating lasting bonds!

Brandie Roberts, Edison State Physics and high school science teacher, took several students to the Women in STEMM Expo, held at Edison State Community College. The event, designed to spark interest of young women in STEMM careers, brought together professionals from a variety of industries to engage with students, share their experiences, and offer valuable insights into the vast opportunities in these ever-growing fields. The expo featured interactive career demonstrations and breakout sessions, led by representatives from several organizations, including The Ohio State University Extension Office, Inventor’s Council of Dayton, Lowe’s Home Center, Premier Health, and several local manufacturers and banks. Each organization provided a unique perspective on how STEMM skills are applied in their industries. One of the event’s highlights was the chance for students to engage directly with professionals, asking questions and gaining a deeper understanding of potential career paths. Students were able to explore the many ways in which STEMM education can lead to fulfilling and impactful careers. In addition to career exploration, Edison State faculty and staff were on hand to discuss educational pathways, internships, and partnerships with local employers, providing students with important resources to help them chart their futures in STEM.

Congratulations to Taran Logwood on being named a recipient of the ‘Students of Integrity Scholarship’! We are thrilled to share that Taran has been recognized as one of 10 students selected for this prestigious award by the Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio. This scholarship, which spans a 21-county area and 40 school districts, honors students who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, community service, and academic excellence. The award ceremony, held last night at The Bluestone in Columbus, celebrated not only Taran but also his values and integrity that led him to receive the $1000 scholarship. Taran joins the ranks of past recipients from WL-S, including Katie Harstel and Cheyenne Gluckle. We would like to extend our congratulations to Taran for this well-deserved recognition. We also want to express our gratitude to the community, educators, mentors, and family members who have played such a role in shaping him into the young man he is today! Taran was joined last evening by his family, HS Counselor Molly Smith and Principal Greg Johnson. Please join us in congratulating Taran on this remarkable accomplishment!

On Monday, November 11, the West Liberty-Salem High School Leadership Council hosted a Veterans Day breakfast to honor local veterans, current service members, and their families. The event, held at the high school, was attended by more than 50 veterans and their loved ones, all coming together to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who served in the military. The WLS Choir set the tone for the morning by performing a beautiful rendition of America the Beautiful, paying tribute to the dedication and service of veterans. Brigadier General Matthew Woodruff, the event’s keynote speaker, shared powerful words of gratitude and encouragement with the attendees. He spoke about the often-overlooked sacrifices that veterans make during their service, recalling not the easy moments, but the challenging ones spent in treacherous conditions with their fellow soldiers. He urged all veterans to continue living a life of service, drawing from the same selflessness they exhibited during their time in the military. The breakfast, which featured 200 eggs, sausage, and pancakes, was made possible by the WLS FFA chapter, whose members arrived early for school to prepare the meal. Community sponsors played a significant role in the event’s success as well. Generous contributions came from local businesses including Woodruff Farms, Theresa’s Gingerbread House, Logan Lawn and Landscape, People’s Savings and Loan Bank, and Solomon’s Garage. Special thanks to Julie Neiman and Andy McGill, who supported the student leaders by helping manage the guest list and speaking at the event. The West Liberty-Salem Leadership Council, consisting of Juniors Tori Douthwaite, Caleb Larson, and Ava Astorino, along with Seniors Taran Logwood, Caleb Hershberger, and Ava Johnson, worked together to organize and host the first annual Veterans Day breakfast, ensuring that local veterans felt appreciated and honored. The breakfast was a meaningful and well-attended gathering that not only recognized the sacrifices of veterans but also reinforced the strong bond between the school, its students, and the community.
