Hello WL-S Families,
Last fall, the State of Ohio passed a law that required school districts to better inform families about the use of technology and the access to student data by the district and by vendors that the district partners with to provide educational related services. West Liberty-Salem Local School District takes protecting the privacy and security of our students’ data seriously. We understand that in today’s digital world, families want to know how their children’s information is collected, used, and safeguarded. That’s why we follow strict guidelines, including those outlined in Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB29), to ensure student data is handled responsibly and securely. Ohio Senate Bill 29 is a law designed to protect the privacy of student data. Under this law, School districts must safeguard student personally identifiable information (PII) from unauthorized access or misuse. Any third-party vendors or service providers that receive student data must follow specific data protection and privacy standards. School districts are required to be transparent with families about the ways student data is used and protected.
Parents may receive a data privacy notice for two reasons. First, you may receive a Student Data Privacy Notification when a curriculum, testing, or assessment technology provider has a contract with our district that affects your child’s educational records. This will be published on our district website which you may access by clicking on the menu button at the top right of the District's home page and navigating to the District section. Choose Technology in this section and it will bring up more information and links to vendors that the district uses. Parents may also get a privacy notice if the district or a technology provider needs to access or monitor a school-issued device under specific circumstances, such as:
If the device is missing or stolen, to respond to an immediate threat to life or safety where responsive action is taken, unless notification creates greater risk, or
when access is granted by a judicial warrant or subpoena.
The District will notify all parents by August 1st, of each year, about any relevant technology provider contracts that affect educational records. This notice will identify the technology provider, the records involved, and contact details for questions.
The district will notify parents within 72 hours if a school-issued device assigned to your child was accessed, including what features were accessed (for example, location tracking or web activity) and the reason for access. If immediate notice would pose a safety risk, we will provide notice once that risk has passed.
This notification process ensures transparency and keeps you informed about how your child’s data is protected and used to support their education. For more information, please see our districts website by following this link; https://www.wlstigers.org/page/technology
