Breakout sessions and interactive career demonstrations with folks from The Ohio State University Extension Office, Inventor’s Council of Dayton, Lowe’s Home Center, Premier Health, banks and other manufacturers and corporations offered participants an opportunity to ask questions and talk with leaders in career fields of their interest. Edison State faculty and staff were also on site to discuss education, internship and partnerships with local employers. While there, they were able to meet with WL-S Alum Wyatt Wilcoxon! It was a great day!

Show choir performed a total of six pieces, and soloists and ensembles performed 17 highly entertaining musical numbers. There was no shortage of entertainment and creativity from this group of very talented musicians. Practices began this summer with a choreography camp led by WL-S Alum McKena Floyd, followed by very early practices and an extensive tech week leading up to the Show Case. Special thanks to Brian Floyd and Noah Floyd for the live music accompaniment.

West Liberty-Salem students are attending Illuminate: Student Leadership Summit on Wellness in Crystal City, Virginia this weekend. High School Principal Greg Johnson and High School Counselor and Key Club Adviser Molly Smith represented the school advisor and leadership roles. The Student Leadership Summit is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary Principals to convene teams across the country, “to advance groundbreaking, student led ideas for challenges that they identify related to wellbeing and mental health.” (NASSP.org) The NASSP sponsors the National Honor Society nationwide and The Principal Recovery Network, an organization that Greg Johnson and Andy McGill are active participants.
West Liberty-Salem represents one of only 19 teams nationwide to attend the event. Student teams were limited to six students per school and limited to students in grades 9-11. Key Club class delegates were given the first round of invitation. Remaining spots were presented as an opportunity to top Key Club members who were invited to write a paragraph on why they should represent WL-S. The following students were selected: Marisa Smith, Taryn Bradley (freshman), Max Rudolph, Isabella Hardwick (sophomore), Carter Titus, and Maddie Cole (Junior). We had many, many students that would easily fit the bill, and students not selected will be invited to serve on a Wellness committee following the summit to put ideas into action.
At the Summit, student leaders will identify a problem at their school and propose realistic solutions. The teams collaborate to share experiences that aim to produce an action plan that define their rationale and provide clear steps working towards change. Following the summit, leaders commit to staying connected with NASSP to share successes and challenges of implementation through surveys, networks, events, and student blogs.
We are excited to be a part of the first-ever student leadership summit and look forward to how our own wellness committee will provide thoughtful solutions to students’ mental health and wellness challenges.
On this day, we honor all former and current members of the Armed Services. Without your valor, compromise, and sacrifice we wouldn't be the great nation that we call home. Today, and every day we thank you, including those who have served our country and also serve(d) as educators, students who have answered the call, and our families who have made the great sacrifice for our country. Happy Veterans' Day!
