Our United Way student representatives have been actively serving their community as United Way volunteer opportunities resume. Michael Stoner, Avery Davis, Kaylee LeVan, and Lance Baldwin are our student representatives this year. Recently, they helped distribute food at the Lions’ Park Food Bank Distribution Drive Thru. This week, they attended the Habitat for Humanity meeting where they learn community needs and how they can assist with an upcoming Habitat project. We look forward to seeing how the projects and volunteer opportunities unfold!

Mr. Henry and the varsity choir performed and recorded a song for Mrs. Ellen Vitt who has been the choir’s beloved accompanist for years. With very little time to practice, they gathered in the atrium of the elementary to take advantage of the best acoustics in the building. They hope, with their message, she is able to feel their love and encouragement as she continues to battle health concerns. Please click the link and enjoy their performance. https://youtu.be/S36uPh7VflQ With Love, The WL-S Varsity Choir

A Smencils is a scented pencil made of 100% recycled newspaper, and the sale serves as the only fundraiser for elementary student council. It’s the 100th day of school, and the first graders celebrated in style! Each student decorated a shirt with 100 items they love from home. Some used stickers, googley eyes, safety pins, plastic toy bugs, Pom Poms, legos, and shiny gemstones to describe their individuality. This morning, they showcased their hard work in a fashion show emcee’ed by their teacher. We have some very creative students, who were excited to share their 100th day idea! The 100th day of school is a celebrated and anticipated tradition each year. It’s a great way for teachers to celebrate the various math, science and writing concepts that can be taught using the number 100. AND, we made it to day 100 together! Looking good, Little Tigers!

It is Read Across America Week, and boy, do the elementary staff know how to celebrate!! Each year, Mrs. Perdue, elementary librarian, organizes a week of fun activities that inspire and celebrate the love of reading. Teachers and staff shared their favorite places to read and what genres they enjoy. Students were joined by guest ‘celebrity’ readers who read special books, and the staff dressed up as their favorite children’s book character! The students really enjoyed that! Their costumes were judged by administrators including Liz Carter, Megan Wilkins, Emily Ridgeway and Chelsea Baldwin in 6 categories plus an overall winner. The results are in, but it was not an easy decision! *Best Accessories: Mrs. Bahan (Pinkalicious *Best Pair: Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Shivley (The Bad Guys *Best Villain: Mrs. Crowder (Big Bad Wolf) *Most Creative: Mrs. Cotrell (Pippi Longstocking) *Best Ensemble: Mr. Hollar, McGill & Mrs. Wilcoxin (Fly Guy & Fly Girl) *Best Look-A-Like Mrs. Bell (Laura Ingles) OVERALL BEST COSTUME: The first grader teachers as The Very Hungry Caterpillar! Congratulations to our winners, but THANK YOU to all of our teachers and staff that helped make this week so fun! Make sure you watch the ‘Gold Card Friday’ video so you can see the creative costumes they came up with! This GCF edition features it’s very first commercial starring Student Council, so be sure to check it out!! Its’ Gold Card Friday! https://youtu.be/fCA2tEFnX5s

This year’s musical presentation is Shrek, The Musical! Because of the seating limitations, only parents will be able to attend in person, but we will have a livestream option available for the community through a company called "Showtix4u". There is an unlimited number of tickets that can be sold. If you purchase the streaming option, it is NOT through the school website "Livestream" option, but through the Showtix4u website. You may purchase a ticket to watch the pre-recorded video on Friday (3/19) at 7pm, Saturday (3/20) at 1pm and/or Saturday (3/20) at 7pm. The video will be the recorded version from dress rehearsal week. Each ticket purchased through the livestream option is considered a "Household" purchase, so each ticket is $16.00. With snow days, and odd schedules lately, it’s finally time to get back to our weekly staff spotlight! This week’s staff spotlight goes to Stacy Dunn! Stacy works hard behind the scenes at school and you may not see her much. But, where she probably looks familiar is assisting with morning drop off, coming in early and braving the cold, rain and other conditions to see our students in the building. Thanks, Stacy! Here is what Stacy shared with us: I joined the WL-S staff in August of 2010, after teaching 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade in Clark County for 13 years,. I quickly learned that WL-S is a special place to be with fantastic students, dedicated staff and unbelievable community support. As part of the WL-S administrative team, I help to support our K-12 staff in various ways, such as, professional development planning, textbook and curriculum supply purchasing, monitoring state mandates, organizing state testing, etc. Although I miss teaching students, I enjoy having the opportunity to assist our district in supporting all of our students. I live in Champaign County and have been married to my high school sweetheart for 24 years. We have 3 children: a son, Jordan, and two daughters, Allison and Brooke. Our son recently graduated from college, our oldest daughter just started her college journey, and our youngest daughter is now in high school (time goes too quickly). Between soccer, 4H animals, and all the other tasks that come with family-life, we’re often busy trying to keep up with everything. Thanks for all you do for WL-S, Stacy!
