We are looking forward to kicking off homecoming weekend events tonight at 6:30 with the parade through the Village. The parade will leave Lions Park. Head down Pickrelltown Road, south on Route 68, and back to Lions Park on SR 245. Join us after for a community Bonfire!

Mrs. Peterson's 5th graders tried solving their first set of BreakOut boxes in Math class. Students were challenged to find their Super Student skills to solve several math problems that unlocked the codes for our winners. Congratulations to students in 5A, 5C and 5D for successfully breaking out of the challenges!
Peak of Ohio will stream all of the events happening on Friday night – Homecoming ceremony and game on 106.9 and their TV streaming platform.

Our October 6th Varsity home football game against Burg is a big game that requires a lot of extra hands in our concession stand! We will have the Pink Out ceremony for our breast cancer survivors during pregame, Little Tiger Cheer, MS band, and Little Twirlers. 8th grade ELA students recently read the short story, 'Fishcheeks,' by Amy Tan. The story is a coming of age, somewhat autobiographical encounter of a young Chinese girl living in America struggling with her identity, cultural differences and heritage. The story, first published in 1987, is commonly used in curriculum to highlight themes of growing up, acceptance of differences, culture, heritage, and family. Students were challenged to use those themes to recreate 'Fishcheeks' in their own world. They created short films to showcase their version of the story, and the creativity was amazing! This lesson highlights the readers ability to relate to the role of a narrator, pick out themes, and apply them to tell a different story. Pictured are students creating their short films, watching them, and credits.
Fourth grade teachers hosted their annual "Book Tailgate Party" this week, and the weather was perfect! The perfect fall tailgate introduces students five different genres of literature (each tailgate has a different genre of books to select). They sampled the books by reading the book jacket or a few pages, and if they liked it, they recorded the title and genre to remember later. This is a fun fall tradition to help students understand the concept of successfully finding ‘good-fit books’, and what genre they might be most interested in. Good-fit books are books that students understand, yet provide a challenge, are interesting for individual taste, and are an appropriate length for their reading level. Finding good fit books encourages students to seek literature they enjoy reading. Following the tailgate, students and their teachers will set and achievable reading goal. Finally, students will express their comprehension through short quizzes after completing a book. They really enjoyed their time at the ‘tailgate party’ and are excited to read some of the books they discovered!

Our 8th grade scientists are studying magnetic field through lab investigation this week. They were asked to use a magnet along with various materials like paper clips and washers and record their observations. They will continue investigations all week long.
Congratulations to our Livestock Judging Team who placed 2nd at The Big E! All 4 members also placed in the top 25 individually! They competed against 7 other states in the competition. Way to represent West Liberty-Salem!

Your K-5th grade elementary student is invited to Little Tiger Cheer Camp on October 3rd and 4th! They will learn cheers, jumps, and a dance that they will showcase during the second quarter of the WL-S Varsity Football game on Friday, October 6th, at 7:00 PM.
