Hello Families, this is Kraig Hissong, Superintendent. As you know, we have had many weather delays and closures this school year. In order to increase hours of instruction we have decided to cancel the two-hour delays for professional development on March 6th, this Friday, and on Friday, April 10th. On those two days school will start at the regular time (7:40 for MS and HS and 7:45 for the Elementary). We apologize for any Inconvenience this might cause and appreciate your cooperation during the rough winter months we have had this year. We may take further action to increase hours of instruction this school year and we will notify you of any further changes. At this time we do not plan to change any dates related to spring break.

Last evening, the West Liberty-Salem Swim Team was recognized at the Team Champ Swim Banquet held at Urbana High School, alongside all county programs. It was a fitting celebration to cap off one of the most historic seasons in school history.
This year marked the largest swim team WL-S has ever had, with eight athletes beginning the season and seven recognized at the banquet. (Ayla Miller was unable to finish the season due to injury.)
Seniors Kamden Hissong and Lydia Schmidt both earned High Point Awards for the Tigers, a testament to their leadership and performance in the pool. Lydia also set a new school record in the 50 Freestyle, adding to an already outstanding senior season.
On the boys' side, Kamden Hissong continued to rewrite the record books. He now holds 10 school records, including individual marks in the 50 Free, 200 Individual Medley, 200 Free, 100 Butterfly, 100 Free, 500 Free, and 100 Backstroke.
In an exciting milestone for the program, WL-S set relay records for the first time in school history. Kamden, along with first-year swimmers Carter Pratt, Isaiah Thoman, and James Brehm, hold school records in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay. Freshman Carter Pratt also established a new individual school record in the 100 Breaststroke.
Kamden shared at the banquet, “I am very excited to see how the swim team does in the future and my biggest hope is that more students will participate. Swim is a tough, but great sport that few students know about or have experienced. We probably have a school full of great swimmers if they would decide to go out for the sport. I really hope it will continue to grow.”
The banquet wrapped up a truly remarkable season, one defined by growth, perseverance, and history-making performances. The future of WL-S Swim is bright, and the bar has officially been raised.

On Friday, Mrs. Orahood’s 5th grade class wrapped up their ecology unit with one of our favorite hands-on activities, an Owl Pellet Lab! After learning all about owls’ habitat, anatomy, adaptations, life cycles, and food chains, students got the chance to investigate real owl pellets to see science in action.
Just like many amazing owl labs we’ve shared before, these Tigers were engaged, curious, and ready to dig in, quite literally! It’s always exciting to see our students make connections from classroom lessons to real-world discoveries. 🐾📚

February is nationally recognized as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and the 2026 theme, “Real Love Respects,” reminds us that healthy relationships are built on respect, trust, and communication.
At West Liberty-Salem, we are launching an initiative to promote awareness of healthy versus unhealthy relationships and to ensure students know that support resources are available. National research shows that approximately 1 in 3 adolescents experience some form of dating violence, highlighting the importance of age-appropriate education and open, supportive conversations in our schools.
This meaningful effort is being led by Abbie Thoman, our student representative on the Ohio School Safety Advisory Council. Through her leadership, we are helping bring awareness, resources, and important dialogue to our school community, all in a way that is respectful, approachable, and centered on student well-being.
We are incredibly proud of Abbie for using her voice to make a positive impact and for helping create a culture where every student feels safe, supported, and valued. 💜🐯

This week, in Mr. Stoner's English 12 class, our students had a unique opportunity to explore life after high school in a hands-on way! Bob Steele from Hobart visited to share career pathways in welding and skilled trades and even brought along a virtual welder simulator for students to try. 👏
Connecting classroom learning to real-world opportunities is what it’s all about. From exploring industry certifications to understanding career demand, students gained valuable insight into high-skill, high-opportunity career options.
Experiences like this help our Tigers see the possibilities waiting for them beyond graduation. 🧡🐯

It was a proud evening in the West Liberty-Salem High School Media Center as Wyatt Longaberger officially signed to continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Findlay, where he will compete for the Oilers soccer program.
Surrounded by his family, teammates, Coach Michael Yoder, Head Coach Tim Wolfe, and Athletic Director Morgan Sullivan, Wyatt celebrated a moment that reflects years of commitment, discipline, and leadership.
On the field, Wyatt’s senior season was exceptional. He was named Athlete of the Season, earned 1st Team All-OHC honors, and was selected 1st Team All-District by the Miami Valley Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (MVSSCA). In addition to his success with the Tigers, Wyatt competes with Elite FC Soccer, challenging himself year-round at a high level of club competition.
Beyond the accolades, Wyatt has been a true student-athlete. He has balanced the demands of academics and athletics with maturity and focus, holding himself to high standards in the classroom while leading by example on the field. His leadership shows up in the little things, encouraging teammates, staying composed in big moments, and consistently putting the team first. He has earned the respect of coaches and peers alike for his work ethic, accountability, and steady presence.
Wyatt has left a lasting mark on our soccer program, and we are incredibly proud of the young man he has become. Congratulations, Wyatt! Your Tiger family will be cheering you on at Findlay every step of the way. 🐯🔥
