United Way of Logan County recently held their Stuff the Bus Campaign that provides school supplies to the students who live in and attend school in and around Logan County. West Liberty-Salem Local Schools was a lucky recipient of the drive made possible by many local anonymous donors dedicated to providing a great start to a new school year. The school supplies will be available for any WL-S elementary, MS or HS student at our open house on Monday, August 30th from 5-7 pm. Thank you, United Way, for making making education a priority in our local communities!

Thank you to everyone who came to support the HS Volleyball team at their pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday morning. Alumni volleyball players formed a team for some post pancake competition against our current varsity team. Middle school and the freshman team followed with contest against each other. They had a great turnout that it may just become an annual event for the team! The varsity team kicks off their season at home against Mechanicsburg on Tuesday evening at 5:30. Good luck, Tigers!

Jim Godwin, a member of the WL-S Tiger’s friday night chain gang for more than three decades, was recognized for his service before Friday night’s match up against the Graham Falcons. Senior football player Logan Godwin, along with Athletic Director Jake Vitt and Head Football coach Dan McGill presented Godwin with a plaque of appreciation. Jim began working as a member of our football “chain gang” 32 years ago and has never missed a game since. He made it a goal to work the sideline until his grandson’s (Logan Godwin) senior season. Friday night, August 20, 2021, Jim worked his final game. The West Liberty Salem School District along with the football program would like to thank Mr. Godwin for his many years of service and selfless dedication to our student athletes.

Hello WL-S families, I hope that your summer is going very well and that you have been able to enjoy some summer fun! School is gearing up for another year and I know many of you have had questions about what this year brings. I am very excited for this school year, and I look forward to hopefully having school return to a new normal. The biggest questions surrounding COVID are usually around masks and vaccinations and if the school district will require them for this school year. To help answer these questions I have placed a document, 2021-2022 School Plan, Link https://5il.co/x63t on the website. It goes into detail about expectations for next school year. I do want to take a moment however to highlight a few things. 1. Masks will NOT be required for this school year (at this time) accept on school busses. 2. Vaccinations are not required for students and staff this school year. However, both are highly recommended by the Ohio Department of Health and the CDC, especially masks if you are not vaccinated. 3. Quarantine guidelines are greatly impacted this year and can be reduced or eliminated if you are vaccinated or wear a mask. Please review the document posted on the website/live feed for details. It may help you and your children to choose how you approach vaccination or masks this school year. 4. All students are eligible for Free breakfast and lunch again this school year! Take advantage of this savings. However, it is still very important for families that feel they may qualify financially for Free and Reduced Lunch, to complete the application since it will still impact school fees, etc. 5. A health clinic will be provided by the Community Health and Wellness Partners, WL-S School-Based Health Clinic from August 23-27 to provide wellness checks, school vaccinations, and if requested, COVID vaccinations for ages 12 and older. Please call 937-887-0075 and leave your name and phone number to set up an appointment. Enjoy the remainder of summer and we look forward to seeing all students and families for an Open House on Monday, August 30th and the first day of school on August 31st. Thank you, Kraig Hissong

Many of our first graders wrapped summer’s ‘Read with your Teacher’ program and they are ready to take on second grade! Our first grade team, Mrs. Spencer, Mrs. Patton, Mrs. Spring, Mrs. Stayrook, and Mrs. Yoder, started this program several years ago to keep young minds active! They met once a week at Lions park, brought their favorite books, a blanket and found a shady spot to read. Most days wrapped up with a popsicle and play time with their friends. Another summer reading is in the books!
