High School students in Mrs. Arnold’s English class recently finished a novel study of Just Mercy by lawyer Brian Stevenson. Stevenson gives a first-hand account of his decades helping marginalized Americans who have been treated unfairly by the U.S. criminal justice system. Through his work he realizes his compassion for the poor and broken inspires his passion to bring mercy and compassion to others. Students were then asked to create a power point presentation about something impactful that spreads mercy and kindness to others. Lexy Lee, a junior, shared that hunger and poverty, both locally and internationally, can impact anyone, even those we assume aren’t in need. She shared ways to help locally, as well as the the mission her church serves in other countries to provide clean drinking water in underserved communities. You can watch Lexy’s presentation by clicking the link below! Thanks, Lexy for letting us film and inspiring others to spread mercy and kindness.

You may remember that just a few weeks ago Elliot Hager, senior, received a superior rating at Science Fair advancing him to districts. This week, he competed at districts earning a near perfect score of 39 out of 40, a $200 cash prize, superior rating, and qualified for State!
His project was on the software development life cycle. Elliot shared, “This cycle is used by companies like Microsoft and Google and other software development companies. It involves talking with the clients, figuring out what they want, building mock-ups, building the application and then putting it to use.”
His presentation included a trifold board, laptop setup with demo, and a 34 page paper detailing the process of the software development cycle and how he built the band database web application.
The State Science Fair is entering their third year of being virtual, so this week Elliot will be busy building a power point presentation of his project, recording his presentation and sending it off for judging! Help us wish Elliot the very best of luck!

Hello WLS Families,
We have had some questions regarding Mobile Hotspots that are available to a limited number of students who do not have internet connectivity at home. Please read our responses to the questions below.
Is the district planning to return to remote instruction since WL-S is providing hotspots?
No, the district has no plans to return to remote instruction. These mobile hotspots were purchased with grant funds that we either used on connectivity or had to return if they were not used. Since we were able to get free devices and 100GB of data each year, we thought it made sense to provide some assistance for students that did not have internet connection at home.
How much service does 100GB of data provide?
According to T-Mobile, 100GB of data is enough to provide service to a student for a school year as long as they are using the hotspot for school purposes only. If a student tries to watch movies, play games, etc., they will run out of data at which point the mobile hotspot will no longer function until it resets for the following year.
What can a student do with 100GB of data annually?
According to T-Mobile:
140 Hours of Streaming Educational Videos
320 Hours of online learning
5000 Hours of internet research
200 Hours of online college test prep.
What type of devices can connect to the mobile hotspot?
Preferably the student's iPad. Any device that supports wifi connection, like a smart phone or home computer can also connect to the mobile hotspot.

Are you a female interested in being a part of the golf team??

Hello families;
WLS recently received the Education Connectivity Grant from the State of Ohio, and we will be using this funding to participate in “Project 10 Million” provided by T-Mobile. This project has provided the district with 50 mobile hotspots to assist families who have limited or no internet access at home. The district would like to distribute these hotspots to students in need of internet connection at home. Priority will go to students who qualify for free/reduced lunch and have no internet at home. Like all mobile devices, the quality of satellite connection will vary depending on your home’s location. We have completed a basic performance review around our area, and it appears that the hotspots will work in most locations in the district. There is no cost for the hotspots since they were covered by grant funds. Each hotspot is to be used for education purposes only and is limited to 100GB of data annually. Due to limited data plans, hotspots should only be used by the student(s) and not be used for gaming, watching movies, or other non-educational activities.
Please contact the school by this Friday, March 18th, to request a hotspot. All requests will be reviewed, and hotspots will be distributed to those selected the week of March 28th. Students will be assigned a hotspot from March 28, 2022 until May, 2023. To get more information or to request a hotspot while supplies last, call the school at 937-465-1060 between 8 and 3 pm or email Alison Cotrell at; alcotrell@wlstigers.org or Julie Nieman at; jnieman@wlstigers.org
All hotspots are the property of WL-S School district and there will be a fee for the replacement cost of the device if the device is lost, stolen, or damaged due to accident or misuse.
Thank you,
Kraig Hissong
