Last week, West Liberty-Salem juniors had the opportunity to learn about the prestigious and nationally recognized Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State programs during a presentation delivered by local Bellefontaine Attorney Matt Chamberlain. As a former Buckeye Boys State participant—and the parent of recent Boys and Girls State attendees—Mr. Chamberlain is deeply passionate about the impact of these programs. He volunteers each year to support Buckeye Boys State and is committed to ensuring Logan County schools, including WL-S, are represented and able to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity.
What Are Buckeye Boys & Girls State?
Buckeye Boys and Girls State are week-long immersive citizenship programs held on Ohio college campuses. Students learn the duties, rights, and responsibilities of good citizenship by taking on hands-on roles in city, county, and state government. Throughout the week, participants gain real-world experience by completing the functions of these roles, from campaigning to governing.
Both programs are:
⭐ Prestigious
⭐ Nationally recognized
⭐ Excellent for building leadership, communication, collaboration, and civic understanding
The programs are fully funded through local American Legion Posts, meaning there is no cost for students to attend.

Buckeye Girls State Alumni & Testimonials
Mrs. Molly Smith, HS Counselor:
“While I had no idea what I was in for when I attended Buckeye Girls State the summer before my Senior year, I came out of the program with invaluable experiences… I had to develop communication and leadership skills in order to network and accomplish goals. While I still may not be a fan of BGSU dorm life, I will forever be a fan of Buckeye Girls State.”
Mrs. Susan Schuster, HS Parapro:
“I highly recommend anyone wanting to better understand how government works apply for Buckeye Girls or Boys State… The friendships you make can be lifetime friends… You hear from current and past officials, and the experience is invaluable on college applications.”
Mrs. Annette Bragg, HS Math Teacher:
“Although I was not really interested in government processes, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the week… The hands-on model was engaging and fun. Years later, our oldest son attended Boys State, and it served as a launching pad for his career in law.”
Mrs. Surena Neer, HS Science Teacher
Mrs. Chelsea Baldwin, District Treasurer
Buckeye Boys State Alumni & Testimonials
Mr. Tim Wolfe, HS Social Studies Teacher:
“We set up a mock state government, held elections from governor down to local officials, and learned how government works through real examples. It was a great learning opportunity that sparked my interest in government and social studies.”
Mr. Morgan Sullivan, Athletic Director:
“Buckeye Boys State is a great way to meet students from across the state and learn leadership dynamics… It’s tied to the American Legion, and during the week you participate in government procedures, volunteer in local agencies, and run a mock state government. It’s a really cool experience!”
Mr. Ben Dobberstein, HS Health/PE Teacher:
Attended West Virginia’s Wolverine Boys State.
