GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

CLASS OF 2023 & BEYOND

Students must meet the WL-S credit requirements listed below as well as demonstrating competency in math and English and showing college or career readiness as outlined by the Ohio Dept. of Education.

  • Minimum of 22 Credits:

English 4.00 Credits

Mathematics 4.00 Credits (Must include Algebra 2 or the equivalent)

Science 3.00 Credits (1 Biology, 1 Physical Science & 1 additional advanced science)

Social Studies 3.00 Credits (World Studies, 20th Century History & Am. Government/Economics)

Health .50 Credit (1 semester)

*Physical Education .50 Credit (2 semesters @ .25 credit each semester)

*Students can complete a PE Waiver by participating in 2 sports seasons

Electives 7.00 Credits (Must have 1 credit of a Business/Technology and 1 credit of Fine Arts)

West Liberty-Salem High School students attending Ohio Hi-Point Career Center will be required to attain

the same number of credits as all other graduates. (Completion of a two-year program at Ohio HI-Point

exempts a student from the Fine Arts requirement.)

  • Show Competency:

  • Earn a passing score on Ohio’s high school Algebra I and English II tests. Students who do not pass the test will be offered additional support and must retake the test at least once. If not able to obtain required score, then student have the option to obtain 1 of the 3 alternative requirements below:

    1. Demonstrate 2 Career-Focused Activities (*at least one of the two activities must be a Foundational Skill.

  • Foundational:

    • Score Proficient on WebExams

    • Earn a 12-point Industry Credential

    • Participate in a pre-apprenticeship or acceptance into an approved apprenticeship program

  • Supporting:

    • Participate in work-based learning

    • Earn the required score on WorkKeys exam

    • Earn the Ohio Means Jobs Readiness Seal

    • Enlist in the Military

  • Show evidence that you have signed a contract to enter a branch of the US Armed Services upon graduation.

    • Complete College Coursework

  1. Earn credit for one college-level math and/or college-level English course through Ohio’s free College Credit Plus program.

  • Show Readiness:

WL-S LOCALLY DEFINED SEALS

Fine and Performing Arts Graduation Seal Demonstrate skill in the fine or performing arts according to an evaluation aligned with guidelines adopted and approved by WL-S BOE

Student Engagement Seal Participate in extracurricular activities such as athletics, clubs, or student government to a meaningful extent, as determined by guidelines adopted and approved by WL-S BOE

Community Service Seal Complete a community service project aligned with guidelines adopted and approved by WL-S BOE

A.Student must complete one of the following:

  • 1.Complete two full credits of fine arts in grades 9-12. Can include Band, Choir and Fine Art courses.

  • 2.Complete a full credit of a fine art (Band, Choir or a Fine Art course) AND successfully participate in one additional fine art related extracurricular experience through WL-S HS (includes Drama Club, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Show Choir, Musical). Successful participation is defined as an engagement in at least 50% of the group’s activities. The activities for each group will be determined and reported by the relevant advisor.

  1. A.Student must complete two seasons of athletics, competitive performance-based activity or student organization.

  2. 1.In addition to the OHSAA school sanctioned athletics, competitive/performance-based activities include: Marching Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Solo and Ensemble, Cheer, Musical and Drama Club.

  3. 2.Student organizations include: Student Council, National Honor Society, Mock Trial, Drama Club, Musical, Quick Recall, Spanish Club, French Club, FCCLA, FFA, Key Club, Ski Club, Chess Club, Book Club, Yearbook Committee or any other school approved organization.

  4. 3.Successful participation is defined as engagement in at least 75% of the group’s activities. The activities for each group will be determined and reported by the relevant advisor.

  1. A.Student must complete and document 120 community service hours and complete a reflection paper or presentation upon completion of the experience.

  2. 1.Community Service being performed outside of the school must be approved by the High School Principal or High School Counselor prior to the start of the project/hours.

  3. 2.School-sponsored community service activities do not require pre-approval.

  4. 3.All community service hours must have a supervisor signature verifying the time served.

  5. 4.Community service hours must be logged on a school provided document log sheet and can be accrued from 9-12 grades. These forms can be turned in at the end of each school year

Meet the requirements and criteria established for the readiness seal, including demonstration of work-readiness and professional competencies.

State Seal of Biliteracy

Meet the requirements and criteria, including proficiency requirements on assessments in a world language and English.

Industry-Recognized Credential Seal

Earn an approved industry-recognized credential that is aligned to a job considered in demand in this state and its regions. (More information is forthcoming.)

College-Ready Seal

Earn remediation-free scores on the ACT or SAT. Current remediation-free scores can be found here.

Military Enlistment Seal

Provide evidence that a student has enlisted in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces; or Participate in an approved JROTC program. (More information is forthcoming.)

Citizenship Seal

A student can:

  • 1.Earnascoreofproficient or higher on both the American History and American Government end-of-course exams;

  • 2.Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on appropriate Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams; or

  • 3.Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in appropriate classes taken through the College Credit Plus program.

Science Seal

A student can:

  • 1.Earn a score of proficient or higher on the biology end-of-course exam;

  • 2.Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on appropriate Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams; or

  • 3.Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in an appropriate class taken through the College Credit Plus program.

Honors Diploma Seal

Earn one of six Honors Diplomas outlined below:

  • 1. Academic Honors Diploma

  • 2.International Baccalaureate Honors Diploma

  • 3.Career-Tech Honors Diploma

  • 4.STEM Honors Diploma

  • 5.Arts Honors Diploma

  • 6.Social Science and Civic Engagement Honors Diploma

Technology Seal

A student can

  • 1.Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on an appropriate  Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam;

  • 2.Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in an appropriate class taken through the College Credit Plus program; or

  • 3.Complete a course offered through the district or school that meets guidelines developed by the Department. (A district or school is not required to offer a course that meets those guidelines.)

Locally Defined Diploma Seals**

Requirements

Community Service Seal (locally defined)

Complete a community service project aligned with the guidelines adopted by the student’s local board of education or school governing authority.

Fine and Performing Arts Seal (locally defined)

Demonstrate skill in the fine or performing arts according to an evaluation aligned with guidelines adopted by the student’s local board of education or school governing authority.

Certified Student Engagement Seal (locally defined)

Participate in extracurricular activities such as athletics, clubs or student government to a meaningful extent, as determined by guidelines adopted by the student’s local board of education or school governing authority.

**State law requires districts and schools to develop guidelines for at least one of the locally defined diploma seals.

AWARDING DIPLOMA SEALS–NEW

State law specifies that districts and schools must attach or affix the diploma seals students earn to their diplomas and transcripts. The Department is working to identify a process and mechanism for attaching or affixing seals to diplomas and transcripts. More information related to diploma seals will be provided by spring 2020.
